Sparta Police Officer Faces Dogfighting Charges

A Sparta police officer and another man face charges of dogfighting and cruelty to animals.

That's according to Special Agent-in-Charge Tom Davis with the GBI's Milledgeville office.

He says 33-year-old Travis T. Edwards was arrested Monday after investigators searched his Hancock County home.

Davis says the GBI started its investigation last Thursday at the request of District Attorney Fred Bright.

The Hancock County Sheriff's Office assisted with the investigation, according to Davis.

A second man, 42-year-old Reginald Shivers of Baldwin County, was also arrested and faces the same charges.

Davis says investigators seized four adult pitbulls and five puppies from Edwards' home.

He says they don't plan to make any other arrests in the case.

Eatonton Woman Fatally Stabbed in Milledgeville

Eatonton Woman Fatally Stabbed in Milledgeville

Milledgeville police say a 19-year-old Eatonton woman was stabbed to death Tuesday night.

Baldwin County coroner John Gonzalez identified the victim as Laura Baswell. He said she died of a stab wound to the chest around 11 p.m. at 1430 Vinson Highway, where her boyfriend Seth Glenn lives.

Glenn said Baswell stabbed herself.  He said she was stressed and agitated Tuesday night and decided to take her own life.

"I was sitting there looking at the TV," Glenn said. "She paced back and forth a couple of times. I heard a noise and she was there. She apparently had stuck herself with a knife."

"We're working this case as a homicide until evidence leads elsewhere," said Milledgeville Police Chief Dray Swicord.

Swicord said Glenn had been very cooperative as detectives questioned him through the night, and would not call him a suspect.

Putnam County Man Convicted of Murder

A Putnam County man has been convicted of murder.

Putnam County Chief Assistant District Attorney Stephen Bradley says a jury Thursday morning convicted David Banks Brett, 64,  of murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and unlawful possession of a pistol.

Bradley says Brett was convicted of murdering Jose Garcia at a home off Little River Trail, near Lake Sinclair.  He says on June 10, 2011 Brett and Garcia got into a dispute over a dog, then Brett went over to Garcia's home and shot him.

He says the jury was out for three hours before reaching a verdict.

Bradley says Brett was sentenced to life in prison plus five years.
