EATONTON – A smoke alarm is credited with saving the life of a woman after fire destroyed her rental home in Putnam County early Wednesday, a fire official says.

Putnam County Fire Rescue Chief Shane E. Hill identified the woman who was awakened by the fire as M. Griffin. She managed to escape injuries from the fire that started in her bedroom shortly before 5 a.m.

β€œThe smoke alarm saved her life,” Hill said.

Battalion Chief Cliff Collins, who lives nearby, was the first firefighter on the scene, the fire chief said.
