Mowing along Hancock, Putnam County highways

Drivers can expect GDOT crews to mow along SR 16 in Hancock and Putnam counties this week.

You'll want to watch out for heavy equipment entering and exiting SR 112 from mile marker 0 through 25 in Hancock and between 0-22 in Putnam County. Expect to see work this week between 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

Flagmen may be on site, according to release.

Ooh La La Lavender Farm open to families Saturday

Ooh La La Lavender Farm opens their gates to families this weekend.

You can visit from 9-4 to see the lavender blooms, take pictures, picnic and see the aimals.

Fresh lavender will also be for sale. Kids will be able to ride ponies and eat snow cones from the concession stand.

Forage specialist to offer Interplanted Alfalfa Field Day

Forage Specialist Dr. Dennis Hancock gives a detailed class on how to plan alfalfa with forage grasses.

He'll detail "site preparation, fertility requirements and variety of selection to assure successful stand establishment."

After a sponsored lunch, the UGA extension specialist will show a farm where Alfalfa has been interplanted with Bermuda.

Then, Research Professional Donald Wood joins Hancock to share information on managing and harvesting strategies.

That's on June 5, from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Putnam County Cooperative Extension at 663 Godfrey Road, Suite 101 in Eatonton.

Tens of thousands without power in Central Georgia

Tens of thousands of people are without power in Central Georgia this morning.

About 10,000 people are without power in Bibb County, 10,000 people in Baldwin County and more than 500 in Jones County, according to Georgia Power's map alone.

More than 11,000 of Washington EMC's 15,000 customers don't have power due to blown transformers and downed trees. Washington EMC services Washington, Johnson, Hancock, Baldwin, Warren, Laurens, Emanuel, Glascock, Jefferson, and Wilkinson counties.

Ice storm brings power outages

Georgia utility companies say more than 177,000 customers were without power as ice coated trees brought branches and power lines down.

Georgia Power reported that more than 104,000 customers were without power shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday.

More than 71,000 of them were in metro Atlanta. Another 29,000 customers were in eastern Georgia; and 1,340 were without power in parts of west Georgia.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for all of central Georgia beginning Tuesday morning until Wednesday afternoon.

A wintry mix is expected for central and southern parts of the state beginning Tuesday afternoon. Rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow are likely Tuesday evening until Wednesday morning.
