Welcoming 2013: Making the Most of the New Year

Welcoming 2013: Making the Most of the New Year

Today is my first day in the office for 2013. I intentionally took time off over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays to step back from work, enjoy my family and clear my head. Now I’m back and ready to hit the ground running! How about you?

In the past I’ve never been much of a believer in writing down my goals or making them for that matter. It all seemed a little woo-woo and out there. However in 2012 I worked with a wonderful organizer and business coach Paris Love (www.parisloveinstitute.com) who convinced me of the importance of setting goals.

Turkey Fryer Safety Tips

Turkey Fryer Safety Tips

During the holiday season, the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department would like to identify some turkey fryer hazards and offer some fire safety tips to ensure that you and your family have a fun and safe holiday.

Turkey Fryer Hazards

• Many units easily tip over, spilling the hot oil from the cooking pot.

• If the cooking pot is overfilled with oil, the oil may spill out of the unit when the turkey is placed into the cooking pot. Oil may hit the burner or flames, causing a fire to engulf the entire unit.

• Partially frozen turkeys placed into the fryer can cause a spillover effect. This too may result in an extensive fire.

• With no thermostat controls, the units also have the potential to overheat the oil to the point of combustion.

• The lid and handles on the sides of the cooking pot get dangerously hot, posing severe burn hazards.

Concussions: The Hard-Hitting Facts

In many sports, the harder the hit, the louder the fans yell, but sometimes the outcome of a big blow isn't something to cheer about, like a concussion.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that one out of every ten athletes in a contact sport will get a concussion each season.

They also estimate that 3.8 million concussions happen each year in the United States with around 70% of them going undiagnosed.

When many people think of concussions, football automatically comes to mind, but women's soccer is the second leading sport for the brain injury.

When the brain moves around inside your head and hits the walls of your skull, that's when a concussion can happen.

It doesn't always take a big blow to do the trick either. Purdue University researchers found that a series of smaller hits can have the same result.

And most happen without the athlete ever losing consciousness.
