Mercer University Cheerleaders to Host Camp for Kids

The Mercer University Cheerleaders will hold a camp for children ages 5-14 July 8-12 and July 15-19.  The camp will be held at the Macon campus.  Times are are noon to 5 pm.  Cost is $120 per session and includes a T-shirt.

Checks, made payable to Mercer University Cheerleading, should be sent to 1400 Coleman Ave, Macon, GA 31027 (Attn: Mercer Cheerleading) along with waiver/registration form.

Putnam, Hancock Counties Jobless Rates Above Georgia Average

Putnam, Hancock Counties Jobless Rates Above Georgia Average

Hancock County's jobless rate was 15.2 percent in February, compared to Putnam's 10.3 percent and Georgia's 8.6 percent.

The Georgia Department of Labor says  February unemployment declined to nine percent in metro Macon.

According to a release, that's down from February 2012, when unemployment for metro Macon was 10 percent.

Georgia's February unemployment rate is 8.6 percent, not seasonally adjusted.

From January to February, metro Macon gained 500 jobs and fewer people were laid off.

Most jobs were added in the professional, business, education, health care, trade, transportation, warehousing, leisure and hospitality industries as well as in in local government.

Metro Macon includes Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Monroe and Twiggs counties.

Where You Live is WMAZ's hyperlocal feature. This means that we are helping bring you more community-specific news more often.

To join our team and share with folks just like yourself, all you have to do is email us your email address and name whereyoulive@13wmaz.com

From there, we set up an account for you. This account lets you log in to your community site and post photo galleries, concerts, community events, 100th birthday parties, your concerns, latest creative projects, how-to advice and anything else you want people in your area to know.

Putnam County Born Alice Walker Celebrates Birthday

EATONTON, GA-- Putnam County-born and Pulitzer Prize winner and author, Alice Walker celebrates her 69th birthday today.

She was born in Ward Chapel, a community near Eatonton, her website says.

Arguably her most notable published work is The Color Purple, that made its way onto Broadway and into many classrooms.

But she has also published, poetry, novels and most recently a memoir: 

The Chicken Chronicles: Sitting with the Angels Who Have Returned with My Memories:

Walker also released a memoir in May 2011.

Putnam, Hancock County Jobless Rates Released

Putnam, Hancock County Jobless Rates Released

 

The jobless rate for Putnam County in December was 10.8 percent.

Hancock's jobless rate was 18.1 percent, according to a state news release.

Hancock and Putnam are two of 67 Georgia counties that have a jobless rate of 10 percent or higher.

The jobless rate in December 2012 was also up for metro Macon.

According to a state news release, unemployment rose to 9.2 percent from November's 8.7 percent rate, but it was down from December 2011 when the rate was 9.5 percent.

Officials claim the rise comes from a combination of factors, including a "slight increase" in new layoffs and a reduction in the area work force.

State Senator David Lucas Sworn into Office

State Senator David Lucas (D-Macon) was officially sworn into office to represent the 26th District yesterday at the state Capitol.  Sen. Lucas will serve Hancock, Twiggs, Washington and Wilkinson counties along with portions of Bibb, Houston and Jones counties.

“It is an honor to once again be at the State Capitol serving the people of Central Georgia,” said Sen. Lucas.  “I am excited to be back under the Gold Dome and look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to pass smart and meaningful legislation this session.”

Prior to being elected to the Senate, Sen. Lucas served in the Georgia State House of Representatives from 1974 to 2011.  While in the House, Sen. Lucas sponsored legislation allowing for the first African-Americans to serve on City Council (HB 1024), as County Commissioner (HB 985) and on the Industrial Authority (HB 533).
