Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) is seeking entries from local students for Georgia's Annual Manufacturing Appreciation Week Design Competition for elementary through high school students. Students from across Georgia will submit artwork depicting the importance of manufacturing to their lives and communities. The contest includes three categories:

Today is my first day in the office for 2013. I intentionally took time off over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays to step back from work, enjoy my family and clear my head. Now I’m back and ready to hit the ground running! How about you?

 

In the past I’ve never been much of a believer in writing down my goals or making them for that matter. It all seemed a little woo-woo and out there. However in 2012 I worked with a wonderful organizer and business coach Paris Love (www.parisloveinstitute.com) who convinced me of the importance of setting goals.

Hancock Central High School plays the Bulldogs in Warren County Friday. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Meet Stitch and Buster Brown

These guys  are available to run around your backyard as of Monday, according to a Putnam County Animal Shelter Facebook posting.

Stitch is about 6 months old and a husky mix male. Buster Brown on the right, about the same age and male, is a lab mix.

Lars Alecksen's Funeral Set for Saturday

Father of fallen soldier  Army Spc. Erica Alecksen, Lars Alecksen passed away Tuesday.

His funeral is set for Saturday, September 1 at 11 a.m.at the Great Hall of First United Methodist Church, according to his obituary.

Eatonton Driver Wins Road Warrior Feature at Dublin Speedway

Matt  McCullough of Atlanta, Ga. passed Eddie Moss of Deland, Fla., on the white flag lap to score the "Border Wars" victory between Fla., Ga., Ala., and Tenn.  mini-sprint drivers at Dublin-441 Speedway Sat. night Aug. 25th. Moss, the pole sitter led the first 14 laps with McCullough and Dirk Miller of Sanford Fla., in pursuit. McCullough slipped underneath Moss between turns 3 & 4, with several  hundred fans on their feet. Miller settled for 3rd.

In Late Models  Robert "Bloomingdale Flash" Diekemper gambled a last lap pass on leader Phil Pittman of Vidalia  to win His feature event. Eric Bagget and Blake Smith, both of Dublin  were 3rd & 4th, while Matt Dooley of Fayetteville, Ga. was 5th.

Putnam, Hancock Counties Unemployment Rates Rise in July

Putnam County's unemployment rate rose to 12.4 percent in July compared to June's 10.6 percent, according to a Georgia Department of Labor news release.

Hancock County's unemployment rate in July was at 19.6 percent, up from June's  18 percent.

That compares to Metro Macon's 10.3 percent in July and Georgia's overall unemployment rate of 9.3 percent.

Putnam and Hancock County are two of 101 counties with a 10 percent or greater unemployment rate. That means 63 percent of Georgian counties had an unemployment rate of 10 percent or higher last month.
