MADISON – The Morgan GOP’s annual President’s Day celebration in Buckhead, Monday night, drew several candidates for the 10th District Congressional seat being vacated by incumbent Paul Broun next year, including 2012 GOP congressional candidate Stephen Simpson, Brian Slowinski of Columbia County, and former state Sen. John Douglas of Social Circle.

Reps. Bishop and Scott React to State of the Union

Two Congressmen who represent Central Georgia responded Tuesday night to the President's State of the Union Address with fundamentally different views on how effective the Commander in Chief was.

Republican U.S. Rep. Austin Scott, District 8, said he was disappointed in what he called a lack of specifics.

"We didn't get to hear more about his specific plans to undo the sequester that he signed," Congressman Scott said. "That is going to have such a devastating effect on our military," he added, referring to the string of cuts that would hit the Pentagon's budget March 1, if Congress doesn't intervene.

He also felt President Obama missed an opportunity to heal wounds from the weeks-long fiscal cliff standoff.

by Senator Burt Jones

It’s hard to believe the first month of session is coming to a close, and although we have already passed influential legislation, there is still much work to be done.  It was an exciting month as the Senate got to work discussing the state budget, passing legislation tightening ethics and beginning to address key state issues as Governor Nathan Deal presented his annual State of the State Address.

I was honored to be appointed Deputy Whip and receive my committee assignments for the 2013-2014 Legislative Session.  I was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the State Institutions and Property Committee, Secretary of the Higher Education Committee and as a member of the Regulated Industries and Utilities and Insurance and Labor committees.  It’s a great privilege to serve on these committees and I look forward to passing legislation benefiting all Georgians.

State Senator David Lucas Sworn into Office

State Senator David Lucas (D-Macon) was officially sworn into office to represent the 26th District yesterday at the state Capitol.  Sen. Lucas will serve Hancock, Twiggs, Washington and Wilkinson counties along with portions of Bibb, Houston and Jones counties.

“It is an honor to once again be at the State Capitol serving the people of Central Georgia,” said Sen. Lucas.  “I am excited to be back under the Gold Dome and look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to pass smart and meaningful legislation this session.”

Prior to being elected to the Senate, Sen. Lucas served in the Georgia State House of Representatives from 1974 to 2011.  While in the House, Sen. Lucas sponsored legislation allowing for the first African-Americans to serve on City Council (HB 1024), as County Commissioner (HB 985) and on the Industrial Authority (HB 533).
