Lucas Completes Political Comeback

Veteran state lawmaker David Lucas successfully completes his quest to regain a seat in the Georgia General Assembly.

Lucas, a Macon Democrat, defeated Republican Bobby Gale of Irwinton in Tuesdays general election to capture the District 26 state Senate seat. Lucas polled 42,627 votes to 19,792 for Gale.
That's 68 percent to 32 percent.

District 26 includes parts or all of Bibb, Twiggs, Wilkinson, Washington, Jones, Hancock and Houston counties.

Lucas won the Democratic nomination by defeating incumbent Miriam Paris and Irving Martinez in the July primary election. Gale was unopposed in the Republican primary.

With Tuesday's victory, Lucas returns to the General Assembly, where he served in the House of Representatives for 34 years.

He resigned his House seat in June 2011 to seek the District 26 seat which became vacant when the late Sen. Robert Brown resigned the position to run for Macon mayor.

Early Voting Now Under Way

Early Voting Now Under Way

Hundreds of people lined up at the Bibb County Board of Elections office Monday for the first day of early voting.

Although we won't have official numbers until late, Elections Supervisor Elaine Carr says it's typical to see a high turnout for an election like this.

The line of voters extended outside the Bibb County Board Elections office, and inside the sight was similar.

"It was a hurry up and wait," says voter David Smith. "They wait outside a long time and then you finally get in, you thought you were going to be able to vote. It kind of like being at Six Flags or Disney World."

Signs hung nearby promoting local candidates, but most voters say the presidential race is what brought them to the polls.

They say they waited for an hour, up to an hour and a half, some for their first chance to vote.

Barrow-Anderson Race Tests How Much Party Matters

SAVANNAH (AP) - Democratic Rep. John Barrow is trying to distance himself from President Barack Obama to offset efforts by his Republican opponent to paint them as political soul mates.

Lee Anderson, a state lawmaker and farmer from Grovetown, officially became Barrow's GOP challenger this week after a protracted primary that had to be settled by an August runoff and a recount Wednesday. Anderson talks of campaigning against both Barrow and Obama as if they're running mates in Georgia's 12th District.

Barrow is running TV ads to counter that message. In one he says: "When the president's right for Georgia, I support him. When he's not, I don't."
