OFTC Thanks Hutchins For His Service

OFTC Thanks Hutchins For His Service

SANDERSVILLE - Oconee Fall Line Technical College President Dr. Lloyd Horadan thanked Gary Hutchins for nine years of dedicated service on the board of directors for the College.

Gary Hutchins retired from the Board of Directors after serving three consecutive three-year terms on behalf of Jefferson County.  Mr. Hutchins began this service with Sandersville Technical College in 2003.

As the sheriff of Jefferson County, Hutchins was a key party to incorporating adult education and GED testing the Jefferson County Prison. Before leaving the August meeting, he encouraged the current OFTC board of directors to understand the importance of helping others with a second chance.

“Mr. Hutchins is one of our greatest supporters,” said Dean of Adult Education Saketha Williams. “He helps others help themselves by becoming productive citizens and getting their life on the right track.”

Skilled Welders in High Demand

Skilled Welders in High Demand

As new alternative energy power plants are being built and as the country’s aging infrastructure needs to be maintained, welders are in demand like never before.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics the demand for welders is projected to increase 15% between 2010 and 2020.

The American Welding Society reports that by 2018, there will be a shortage of some 300,000 welders nationwide due to the number of welders retiring. (The average age of welders in the U.S. is 54 years old.)

The demand in the United States for welders is high and the employers are not small companies. Many are large energy companies who are expanding in the area and are seeking people who want to work.

With regional projects at the Savannah River Site and Plant Vogtle near Augusta, there will be a high demand for welders for the next few years. There will be more jobs than there are welders.

Online College Algebra? Are You Serious?

Online College Algebra? Are You Serious?
Of all the courses required in an associate degree program, college algebra normally strikes the most fear. Even students who normally welcome online courses shy away from taking college algebra totally online. However, OFTC’s new online college algebra course taught by Instructor David Brown is not that scary at all according to his students.

“This online course is practically the same as a face-to-face one,” explains Mr. Brown, “except that students can take this class from the comfort of their homes on their home computers at times convenient for them.”
